When I started working as a Marriage and Family Therapist, some of my first experiences were with people struggling with addiction issues. I saw the destruction of drug and alcohol addictions on individuals, families and our community.
Although my experience was limited at the time, I could hear their stories of struggling and hurt, but also see their desire to get help.
As I started to look further I saw another side of the addictive process. One that many people, even other therapists, didn’t want to see or felt uncomfortable talking about. As many of these individuals started to get better they started to talk about their issues with sex. They stated that they felt out of control when it came to sex. They were taking risks, causing themselves pain and loss. They often described this as their secret addiction.
I started to investigate what was going on, and that was when I knew this was an area where people needed help, but few wanted to work in.
I have currently worked over eight years in the field of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity. I’m a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist, and have trained under Patrick Carnes, P.hD., a renowned pioneer researcher and author of one of the first books on sexual addiction, “Out of the Shadows”. One of the great benefits of this training is access to the latest research and resources dealing with these issues. This gets passed onto my clients, helping them gain a stronger and quicker recovery.
I am also a member of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH), and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
I strongly believe healing and change are possible if we allow ourselves to reach out for help and open ourselves to that end.
